Three Generations. One Family Business.

The Rea family’s involvement in road transport began before Rea Distribution itself was established. In the early 1970s, John Rea Senior established Rea Transport, initially operating the business from a rented room in the home of Louie McCann in Belfast.

From those modest beginnings, Rea Transport grew rapidly into a substantial haulage operation, operating an extensive fleet of articulated vehicles across Ireland and Great Britain. The business became recognised for its willingness to innovate and was associated with operating the first purpose-built refrigerated trailer by an Irish haulier. That pioneering involvement in refrigerated transport is particularly relevant today, with temperature-controlled logistics once again forming an important part of the modern Rea Distribution operation.

1981, Rea Distribution is Established

In 1981, John Rea Senior established a new company, Rea Distribution Limited was formally incorporated on 24 September 1981.

John’s son, Johnny, had joined the family transport business in 1979 and worked alongside his father while also developing his successful motorcycle racing career.

The foundations of today’s Rea Distribution were being established: a family operation built around service, relationships and getting the job done.

Continuing John's Legacy

John Rea Senior remained actively involved in the business until his death in October 1993, aged 67.

Following his father’s death, Johnny continued to develop Rea Distribution, building on the foundations established by John Senior while taking the business forward into its next generation.

The business continued to grow and evolve while retaining the values established from the beginning – personal service, long-term relationships, accountability and a willingness to get the job done.

Those principles remain central to Rea Distribution today.

Transport and motorcycle racing

Motorcycle racing has run alongside the Rea family business for generations, sharing many of the values that shape Rea Distribution today. John Rea Senior established Rea Racing and supported Joey Dunlop, providing the distinctive Rea Racing Yamaha TZ750 still owned by the family today. His son, Johnny Rea, combined the family transport business with a successful racing career, winning numerous Irish and Ulster championships and the 1989 Isle of Man Junior TT.

The next generation took the Rea name onto the world stage, with Johnny’s eldest son, Jonathan Rea, winning an unprecedented six consecutive WorldSBK Championships from 2015 to 2020.

Preparation. Reliability. Teamwork. Commitment. Performance.

Values that continue to shape Rea Distribution today.

Continuing the Family Business

In 2009, Richard Rea joined the family business, becoming the third generation of the Rea family to work within Rea Distribution. Having worked through the business and developed an understanding of its day-to-day operation, Richard became a Director and today plays a key role in driving Rea Distribution forward.

While protecting the values and personal service established by his grandfather and continued by his father, Richard’s focus has been on modernising the business through investment in technology, digital integration, fleet, equipment and new logistics capabilities.

The business continues to evolve, but its family character remains unchanged. Decisions can be made quickly. Customers can speak directly to the people responsible for their operation, relationships are built for the long term, and the family remains directly involved in the business every day.

Looking to the Future

Today, Richard has two young sons of his own, creating the possibility of a fourth generation of the Rea family in years to come.

There is no expectation that they will follow the same path, but they will grow up knowing the door to the family business will always be open should they choose to become involved.

For Rea Distribution, that is what being a family business means – protecting what previous generations built, continuing to move it forward, and leaving the opportunity there for the next generation to make their own choice.

45 Years, and still moving forward

2026 marks 45 years of Rea Distribution.

What started with John Rea Senior in 1981 has developed across three generations into a modern transport and logistics operation connecting customers throughout Northern Ireland, Southern Ireland and Great Britain, supported by Freight Management capabilities extending into Europe and worldwide.

Investing in the future

A major stage in the development of Rea Distribution came in 2015 when the business relocated from Ballyclare to its current facility on Greystone Road in Antrim. The move provided the space and infrastructure required for the next stage of the company’s development.

Today, our Antrim operation provides approximately 28,000 sq ft of warehousing, storage and cross-docking facilities within a 2.45-acre site. The facility is supported by monitored security systems, CCTV, controlled access and dedicated operational areas.

The move to Antrim provided the platform for continued investment in our fleet, people, temperature-controlled capability, equipment and technology.
